About the publication
Careful writing, from California.
Chunky Academy is an independent publication covering the plants, people, and policy shaping modern wellness in California. We write about terpenes, cannabinoid science, craft cultivation, lab testing, and the regulatory landscape surrounding all of the above.
What we cover
Our beat is narrow and we try to be good at it. We publish original essays on the biology and chemistry of the hemp plant, the craft of cultivation, the discipline of independent lab testing, and the federal and state policy framework that governs what consumers can access. We do not publish product reviews. We do not sell products on this site. We do not run sponsored content.
Our audience is adults — mostly in California, but increasingly elsewhere — who want to understand the subject rather than be sold on it. We write for people who read Wine & Spirits or Cook's Illustrated and want the same kind of careful, source-cited coverage of a field that has, until recently, not had much of it.
Who writes here
The editorial team is small. Our contributors include working cultivators, analytical chemists, agricultural policy researchers, and writers with backgrounds in long-form science journalism. We name them at the top of every essay. We pay them fairly. We do not accept free samples or hospitality from brands we cover, including our affiliated craft operator.
Our affiliation
Chunky Academy is published by Chunky Academy Media LLC, a California-registered publishing company. Our affiliated craft operator, Chunky Academy Inc., produces hemp-derived products under California state law. The two entities share a brand heritage and ownership origin but operate as separate businesses with separate editorial and commercial functions.
The firewall between editorial and commerce is explicit: the editorial team chooses what to write about, which sources to cite, and how to frame conclusions. The affiliated operator does not review content before publication. When we cover our affiliate — for example, in publishing their lab reports — we disclose the relationship.
For the full text of our editorial policies, see our editorial standards.
What you won't find here
No medical claims. No strain ratings. No "top ten" lists. No paid placements. No AI-generated copy presented as original writing. When we don't know something, we say so; when the evidence is thin, we flag it; when an essay reaches an unsatisfying conclusion because the research is unsettled, we let it sit there unsatisfying rather than round it off with a neater ending.
